Sexual assault survivors:
Let’s focus on post-traumatic growth!
As a “survivor” of sexual assault, you can often be left with strong feelings of guilt, shame, and self-blame, which can be difficult to dismiss. You can feel alone and isolated even when surrounded by others. It can be difficult to feel like you have any control over yourself or your life. Emotionally, it’s common to feel like you are all over the place. While these after effects are common and normal, they definitely do not have to be a life sentence. You can get back to being you and create a life worth living.
We are very excited to offer this new group! “Survivor Living” is a results-driven group for both men and women (18+ please) that uses proven techniques to help you build the life you want to live. Learn how to be more present, tolerate your painful emotions, change emotions that need changing, be able to ask for help, and to say no when necessary. This group is DBT-informed (not a true DBT program) and includes skills-training in the four main areas of Dialectical-Behavior Therapy: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. It runs for 6 months, meeting weekly for 75 minutes each week. We recommend that you remain in this skills-based group for a year, meaning you get to go through each module twice during the course of the group.
Note: this is not a group where stories of sexual assault will be shared. This is also not a “support group”. While you will definitely find support within the group, it will be skills-based in nature. The group will entail education and skills-training that you will be expected to practice in between sessions. The group is cumulative in nature and if you choose to participate, weekly attendance is expected.
This group will be held on Monday evenings beginning in March 2019, from 6 to 7:15 pm, and cost $50 per session. Sessions will be held in Mariemont, Ohio, and will be run by Jennifer Simpson, LISW-S of Thrive.
To protect the integrity of the group, there are only 8 seats available. Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or 513-780-5313 for additional information. Prior to group, we will meet for an assessment to ensure this is an ideal fit for you. Treatment options will be discussed at that time.
Already have a therapist you love but still interested in participating? No problem. Talk it over with your therapist. Oftentimes, your individual sessions can continue while you attend this group.
You’ve survived, now it’s time to Thrive. Let’s do this!
